Information about Utrecht
Utrecht is the beating heart of the Netherlands with unique dynamics. It is a city, municipality and the capital of the province of Utrecht. Utrecht was one of the first cities in the Netherlands of the present day to be granted city rights. The city has a long history and an important historical centre. One of the characteristics of the city are the dockyards: here, you can walk round and discover the medieval city centre and the Dom of Utrecht, a magnificent Gothic church, giving Utrecht its other name of ‘Dom city’.
In the area of culture and history, Utrecht is unique in its kind. For days on end, you can enjoy festivals with a cosmopolitan character, modern architecture, atmospheric terrace cafes, hospitable restaurants, trendy shops and fascinating museums.
The city is home to three universities, the largest of which is the University of Utrecht, the second largest university in the Netherlands.
At present, Utrecht has a student population of more than 65,000.
In addition, in Utrecht are the seats of the Roman-Catholic Archbishop of the Netherlands, the Archbishopric of Utrecht and the Old-Catholic Archbishopric.
