Information about Egmond

For a day of rest or an active day at the beach, you will thoroughly enjoy a visit to Egmond. The area of Egmond consists of three centuries-old villages - Egmond Binnen, Egmond aan den Hoef and the characteristic seaside resort of Egmond aan Zee, which fall under the municipality of Bergen. Egmond is a very popular tourist resort, and the beach at Egmond aan Zee attracts many visitors annually. There are a great deal of recreational activities available, such as mountain biking, kayaking, walking and cycling. There are many activities organized during the summer months. There is still a community of Benedictine monks living in Egmond Binnen.

The location and surrounding area of Egmond

Egmond lies in Noord-Holland, in the centre of the Kennemerland, a spectacular nature area with beautiful dunes, a wide beach and vast woods. To the south of Egmond aan Zee, there is the Noord-Hollands Dune reservation that stretches as far as Wijk aan Zee.
In the spring, you can admire the wonderful colourful bulb fields around the Egmond area. Egmond and its surrounding area has everything to offer the tourist, with its sea, breath-taking beaches, beautiful white dunes and vast woods where you can have a lovely time.

All there is to do in Egmond

Egmond is a very renowned seaside resort and is very popular among beach lovers.
The surrounding area of Egmond is ideal for a relaxing cycle or walk; and for horse riders, in the Kennemer dunes, there are bridle paths stretching for kilometres.
Egmond Binnen is still home to the Benedictine monks who run a candle-making business next to the abbey, which you can visit and see the monks making candles as well as pots.

In Egmond aan de Hoef, you can visit the ruins of the castle of Lamoraal, the Count of Egmond, which was destroyed during the Dutch War of Independence. Monuments

On the promenade of Egmond aan Zee, there is the spectacular white lighthouse, Jan van Speijk, with its bronze lion, built in 1841. The Dutch Reformed church dating from 1746 is the oldest in the Egmond area, a national monument with a good dry location on the sand dunes, far removed from the sea.

Art and culture

Egmond has plenty to offer in the way of art and culture, with various museums such as:

Egmond Museum, housed in one of the oldest buildings in Egmond. Here you can learn about the past and the lives of the people from the area. There is a cabinet displaying models of old ships, and the ‘visserskamertje’ is a replica of inside a fisherman’s house, complete with a box bed, a round iron stove, and the family members dressed in costume. The showpiece of the museum is a former life boat, located in the boat shed. A visit to Egmond Museum is also a fun and learning experience for children;  
he Prins Hendrik de Zeevaarder nautical museum was once a home for retired sailors. Now you will find maritime paintings, ships models, antiquities and curiosities here.

In atmospheric Egmond, you can browse round the many different and original shops. In the centre there is a succession of shopping areas, also with places to eat and drink, each one with its own character. There is a good choice of shops and a wide variety of things to buy.

Well-known sports events are the Egmond Half Marathon and the Egmond- pier- Egmond mountain bike race which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
