From Volendam, this route leads you through the low-lying peat meadow area of Waterland and its picturesque villages. You will pass Edam and Purmerend, and via Monnickendam you will have beautiful views of the Gouwzee and the Markermeer. You start the route at De Dijk in Volendam, the village of international fame. It often represents the national costume. If you take a break on the terrace, you are bound to see someone else in traditional dress. You will cycle through the low-lying peat meadow area of Waterland, and in Edam you will pass merchant houses from days gone by. Here, on the terrace of 'De Fortuna', you can still see the boats passing through one of the oldest bridges, manually operated by the harbour master. On the Zeedijk, you can visit Henri Willig's Alida Hoeve, where they give a cheese-making demonstration and where you can taste cheese - and honestly, do you know how cheese is made?
